Top Ten Rock Climbing Destinations
Rock climbing has been around since the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Since then rock climbing has evolved into a heralded sport among many nations and a hobby of those who love all things dangerous and exciting. The seasoned rock climber is always in search of the next great adventure, but where that next adventure lies can sometimes be a mystery. There are many great areas all around the world, but it takes a real adventure to make the Top Ten Rock Climbing Destination’s list.
1. Cedar Bluff
Located in Marion, IL, Cedar Bluff offers courses from beginner to skilled. It has access to top-rope at most climbs and accommodates sport climbing, top-roping, trad, and a bit of bouldering. There are no spots for camping but accommodations are located nearby.
2. Draper’s Bluff
Located in Buncombe, IL, Draper’s Bluff offers all difficulty levels and is slightly warmer than Cedar Bluff, especially in the summer and fall months. With heights of 120 feet, bouldering is perfect for this climb. There are no camping accommodations; therefore, this is a great spot for a day trip.
3. Colorado Springs
Home of Pike’s Peak, Colorado Springs attracts many climbers, especially during the summer months. Pike’s Peak stands 14, 110 feet tall and is on of the nations famous landmarks. The peak is accessible by railway or by car.
4. Yosemite National Park, CA
Home of Half Dome Hike, Yosemite National Park attracts climbers and tourists throughout the year. Half Dome is only for those who are in great shape and are experienced climbers. Be wary though, since the last 200 yards of the back of the dome requires the use of steel cable handrails. Since the hike takes 12 hours, it’s best to start early in the morning.
5. Rocky Mountain National Park, CO
Longs Peak lies in this park and is open 24 hours a day. The trail passes through the mountane, sub-alpine, and alpine zones. This park is also home to The Loch Trail and North Inlet Trail.
6. Unlikely Wall
Located 15 miles from Bloomington, IN, this spot is smaller but the 25 foot boulder snags most every visitor’s attention. There are no camp sites so a day trip to Bloomington is advised.
7. Coconino National Forest, AZ
Rising 9,299 feet, Mount Elden lies in Coconino National Forest. The hiking season here runs from May to October. This trail is also closed to horses and the best way to get to the summit is to hike.
8. Moab, UT
Moab is a great place for climbers who love to boulder and also has plenty of face, slab, crack routes. This place also has long parallel splitters and corners. The park is open throughout the year.
9. New River Gorge National River
This park has the best crack-climbing in the East and is located in West Virginia. Top ropes are easier to rig at this park than most places, and climbers recommend climbing Beauty Mountain and Junkyard Wall.
10. Acadia National Park
Acadia is located in Maine and is home to Schoodic Point, which is a very remote unit. The climb winds along the water of Acadia and is especially beautiful during windy seasons.
